Glyph
Glyphs are one of the coolest visual elements you can use in digital design, especially when working with Glyphic fonts. Think of them as little graphic symbols they can represent numbers, letters, or even special icons used across apps and websites. They’re super flexible and can be mixed with text and images to create eye catching, original content. You can even nest them inside other graphics or combine multiple glyphs to build more complex visual packages. It’s like digital LEGO!
If you’re on a Windows PC, you’ve probably encountered glyphs without even realizing it. They play a big role in how text and symbols are displayed. Microsoft includes a huge collection over 15,000 glyphs many exclusive to Windows. There’s also something called WGL (Windows Glyph Language), though it’s not as widely used as the standard Microsoft set. Then there’s WGL4, also known as the Pan European character set, which offers more than 650 characters, a couple of which you’ll only find on Windows.
Working with glyphs is pretty intuitive. Open up the Glyphs panel, and you’ll see all the available symbols laid out in a grid. You can quickly flip through them by clicking on thumbnails or hovering to get a closer look. Hovering also reveals extra details about each glyph. Want to hide or highlight one? Just use the up/down arrows. To remove a glyph, a simple click takes it out of the grid making it invisible to you and others. You’re free to add or remove glyphs manually, and the panel always shows your current selection. It’s all about giving you control over your visual toolkit.
