Universal USB Installer

Universal USB Installer (UUI) is a popular free tool that lets you put an operating system onto a USB stick, making it bootable and ready to use. Originally developed by Pen Drive Linux, UUI is actually the earlier version of another well known tool called YUMI. The main difference? UUI lets you install one OS per USB, while YUMI supports multiple operating systems in one multiboot setup.

One of the coolest things about Universal USB Installer is that it’s open source. That means developers can tweak the code and release their own versions. But here’s a word of caution while the original UUI is safe and malware free, some modified versions might not be. So it’s always smarter to download the official release to avoid any risks.

Wondering how to actually use it? It’s pretty straightforward. Once you open UUI, you’ll need to agree to the terms. Then, you’ll see a simple interface where you pick your desired OS distribution, locate your ISO file, and choose the USB drive. The tool even helps you download an OS directly if you don’t have the ISO yet super handy for beginners.

If you already have an ISO file, just browse and select it. After that, plug in your USB, select it in the software, and choose between FAT32 (for drives under 32GB) or NTFS (for larger ones). You’ll also have the option to wipe the drive clean before creating the bootable USB so make sure you’ve backed up any important data!

Once you hit “Create,” UUI gets to work. A progress bar will show you how it’s doing, and when it’s done, you’re all set. You’ve got yourself a bootable USB.

Of course, Universal USB Installer isn’t the only tool out there. With CDs and DVDs becoming obsolete, plenty of alternatives have popped up. Tools like Etcher, Rufus, and YUMI are also great options. Etcher, for example, is known for its clean and user friendly design, while YUMI supports multiple OSes on one drive. So depending on what you need, there’s something for everyone.
