Undertale
Ever heard of Undertale? It’s this incredible indie RPG created by a solo developer, Toby Fox. The game pulls you into the story of a kid who accidentally tumbles down into the Underground a hidden world beneath the Earth’s surface, cut off from humanity. What makes Undertale so special isn’t just the gameplay, but the way your choices shape everything. It’s like a "choose your own adventure" book, but in video game form. Every decision you make can twist the story in wild, unexpected directions.
The heart of Undertale is its storytelling. You play as a human child who finds themselves in a land full of monsters. These monsters weren’t always underground they used to live alongside humans until a great war broke out. After their defeat, they were banished below and sealed away by a magical barrier. Now, you’re stuck there too, and the only way out is through.
Early on, you meet Toriel, a kind, goat like monster who acts as your guide. She helps you navigate puzzles and avoid dangers, but eventually, you have to leave her behind and venture deeper into the Underground. Your goal is to reach King Asgore’s castle, which holds the barrier’s exit. But here’s the catch: how you get there and who you meet along the way depends entirely on how you play.
You’ll encounter all sorts of monsters on your journey, and you have three basic ways to deal with them: fight until they’re gone, show mercy and spare them, or pick and choose. Each path leads to a different ending. You might make it back to the surface alone, with friends, or not at all. The game remembers your actions, and it’s not afraid to call you out on them.
Combat in Undertale is a mix of bullet hell and turn based strategy. When a fight starts, a little heart your soul appears on screen, and you have to dodge attacks while deciding what to do. You can fight, use items, or try to calm the monster down. If you spare them, you might gain EXP (Execution Points), which increases your LOVE (Level of Violence). But be careful the more violent you are, the more the story darkens.
What really sets Undertale apart is its replay value. Because of the branching storylines and multiple endings, no two playthroughs are the same. You might have a peaceful run where you befriend everyone, or a brutal one where you leave no one standing. The game’s charm, humor, and emotional depth make it appealing to both casual gamers and hardcore RPG fans. It’s challenging when it wants to be, but always easy to follow and impossible to forget.
