PhotoShow
If you're still running Windows XP and trying to get Photoshop working, you're definitely dealing with some unique challenges. While the original post mentioned PhotoShow, I think there might have been some confusion between different photo editing applications. Let's clear things up about getting PhotoShop running on that classic Windows XP system.
First things first you'll need to find an older version of PhotoShop that's actually compatible with Windows XP. Versions like PhotoShop CS2 or CS3 were the last ones that officially supported XP. Newer versions simply won't install or run properly on that operating system. You might be able to find these older versions through Adobe's legacy software archive or through authorized resellers that still carry them.
One common issue with running PhotoShop on XP involves display and performance problems. Since XP can't handle modern graphics cards and drivers as well as newer systems, you might experience lag or visual glitches. Try reducing the graphics acceleration in PhotoShop's preferences and make sure you're using the most recent drivers available for your graphics card that still support XP.
If you're having installation troubles, running the installer in compatibility mode can sometimes help. Right click on the setup file, choose properties, and set it to run in Windows XP compatibility mode (even though you're already on XP). Also, make sure you're logged in as an administrator during installation, as XP had much stricter permission requirements than modern Windows versions.
Memory can be another bottleneck. Windows XP 32 bit can only address up to 4GB of RAM, and PhotoShop might not be able to use all of that effectively. If you're working with large files, consider adding a scratch disk and optimizing your virtual memory settings to give PhotoShop more room to work.
Lastly, keep in mind that running such old software comes with security risks. Since both Windows XP and older PhotoShop versions no longer receive security updates, it's best to keep this computer offline or behind strong firewall protection. Consider whether your needs might be better served by modern, lightweight alternatives like GIMP or Paint.NET that still offer XP compatibility with better security.
