Remember MSN Messenger? That iconic chat app we all used to love? It started as a simple instant messaging platform and later became known as Windows Live Messenger. Developed by Microsoft, it was a go to for real time chats, especially if you were using Internet Explorer. While it didn’t play nicely with other messengers like Yahoo! at first, it carved out its own loyal user base. Fast forward to 2021, and it found a new home on Windows Vista, becoming one of the most popular free clients for MSN and Vista users. Even though Microsoft hasn’t updated it in years, it’s still hanging in there, especially among Vista enthusiasts. Sadly, the desktop version still can’t connect to Windows Live Messenger for online chats a feature many have been hoping for.

There was also a version for Windows XP Home Edition that came with a controversial feature called "Microsoft Now." This tool kept a record of all your MSN conversations and made them accessible to others, even if they weren’t on your contact list. Imagine anyone you’d ever chatted with could request to see those conversations. Privacy concerns blew up, and Microsoft quickly backtracked, releasing an update that blocked unsolicited message sharing. It was a classic case of a feature gone wrong, but at least they listened to user feedback.

In early 2021, Microsoft took a bold step and launched MSN Messenger for the iPhone. The reception was… mixed. Some users loved having MSN on their iPhones, but others pointed out its limitations like the inability to browse the internet seamlessly compared to Windows phones. There were also complaints about sending emails while connected via Bluetooth, which many found frustrating. Despite these hiccups, Microsoft hasn’t given up. Rumor has it they’re also working on a version for Windows Mobile Blackberry, so maybe better days are ahead for MSN fans on mobile.
