Mozilla Sunbird

Ever wondered what happened to Mozilla Thunderbird? Well, it’s not gone it’s evolved. Meet Mozilla Sunbird, a fresh, web based project that stepped in to fill the shoes of the classic email client. Launched in October 2021, Sunbird isn’t just another calendar tool it’s open source, built on Mozilla’s XUL language, and designed to run right in your browser. Think of it as a standalone, licensing free version of the calendar and task manager that once lived inside Thunderbird.

This isn’t just a small update it’s a full visual and functional overhaul. In fact, it’s one of the biggest shifts since Thunderbird first launched, even bigger than some of the changes we’ve seen in Firefox. What really sets Sunbird apart is its new visual engine, which is based on the OpenOffice suite. The goal? A smoother user experience and a stronger platform for future development. While Thunderbird and OpenOffice serve different purposes, this new engine helps both tools stay competitive and modern.

It’s interesting to look back at where Thunderbird came from. It was built on an HTML mail framework originally developed by Netscape, and its design still carries some of that classic Netscape vibe. Over the years, well known designers like Rob Reis, Christian Dalsgaard, and Michael Cadeoles have all left their mark on the project. And though Mozilla is now under Hewlett Packard’s wing, it’s still holding on to its own codebase instead of fully adopting others’. That means some of the original contributors are still involved, though tensions with Microsoft have led others to move on. Who knows we might even see some clashes between these tech giants down the road.
