Microsoft Video Screensaver Microsoft Video Screensaver

Remember those old screensavers with the flying toasters or the maze? Well, Microsoft Video Screensaver was like the cool, modern cousin for Windows XP and Vista. It let you ditch those basic animations and use actual videos as your screensaver instead.

The idea was pretty neat. Instead of just one default video, the program would pull a different video for each user profile on the computer. So, if you shared a family PC, everyone could have their own personal video playing when the screen was idle. You weren't stuck with Microsoft's choices either; you could easily browse and pick any video file already on your system. People found it worked with more than just WMVs, which was a nice bonus.

Changing your background was a breeze just a button push. You could cycle through up to five different video clips in the rotation. One of the handier features was that it integrated with other programs, letting you open files or even launch websites directly from a slideshow view, kind of like using PowerPoint for your desktop.

It played well with others, too. You could use popular media players like Windows Media Player, QuickTime, or RealPlayer to power the videos. It gave you control to tweak how things looked adjusting the resolution, aspect ratio, and even the color tint to make your home movies or favorite clips look just right on the screen. It also acted as a simple hub, letting you browse other screensavers and manage some basic Windows programs right from its interface. All in all, it was a straightforward tool to make your idle screen a bit more personal and a lot more interesting.
