It’s simple, fast, and gets the job done.

Originally created by a developer named Gabest, MPC was all about efficiency and simplicity. But in 2006, the original project was discontinued. Luckily, the community wasn’t ready to let it go. A group of enthusiasts from the Doom9 forum forked the project and created Media Player Classic – Home Cinema (MPC HC), which kept the spirit alive with new features and updates.

One of the biggest strengths of MPC is its wide format support. Whether it’s AVI, MP4, MKV, MOV, MP3, or less common files, MPC handles them smoothly. It also supports modern codecs like H.264, H.265, and VP9, so you can play high quality videos without extra hassle.

Customization is another highlight. You can change the look with different skins, use keyboard shortcuts for quick controls, tweak audio with an equalizer, or adjust video settings like brightness and contrast. Sadly, even MPC HC eventually saw its last update in 2017 due to a lack of active developers. The official site went offline, and the project is no longer maintained. While some community forks still exist, they come with risks, since there’s no official support or security updates.

For those still using MPC, it might be time to consider alternatives like VLC Media Player, which is actively developed and widely trusted.
