Graffiti Studio

For years, New York City police chased one of the most elusive graffiti artists whose work popped up across subway cars and city walls. The search finally ended when surveillance footage captured Steven Wellingberg and five others in action over three days in December. The video didn’t just show spray cans it revealed weapons, targeted businesses, and even a moment where a weapon was pointed at a woman. It was more than art; it was intimidation.

Despite the city’s so called war on graffiti, the problem is far from over. Last month, a judge ordered the removal of a Hezbollah flag drawn on the Brooklyn Bridge. In August, the front doors of a Manhattan Bank of America were tagged with “robbing bank” in bold red letters. Property owners are on edge some are even considering tearing down walls to avoid becoming the next target.

It’s not just corporate buildings taking the hit. A Queens church was marked with “Pig Pen,” a kid’s bicycle was tagged “Kool Aid,” and a Brooklyn church was painted with “Stop the Violence.” In one of the more ironic twists, a 14 year old was arrested for graffiti while walking down Rodeo Drive. If all this makes you want to pick up a spray can legally there’s a place for that. Graffiti Studio, New York’s first official spot for street art, is ready to turn that urge into something creative, not criminal.
