Flutter

Ever wished you could just wave your hand to pause your favorite song or movie from across the room? Flutter is an app that promises exactly that using your computer’s webcam to detect motion gestures and control media playback. It’s designed for those moments when you’re lounging on the couch with your laptop connected to the TV, and getting up to press pause feels like a major effort. Sure, you could use a wireless mouse or keyboard, but where’s the fun in that?

To use Flutter, you’ll need a webcam built in or external since it relies on camera input to recognize gestures. Right now, the app supports one main gesture: holding up your hand in a "stop" sign to play or pause content. It works with a bunch of popular media players, including VLC, iTunes, Windows Media Player, and Spotify, so compatibility isn’t really an issue.

But here’s the catch: in practice, Flutter doesn’t always deliver. During testing, gesture recognition was hit or miss sometimes it worked smoothly, other times it completely ignored gestures. It also feels pretty limited at this stage. You can’t skip tracks, adjust volume, or rewind just play and pause. For an alpha release, that’s not exactly impressive.

There are simpler alternatives out there, like smartphone apps that turn your phone into a wireless remote for your computer. Those tend to be more reliable, even if they’re not as futuristic. Still, Flutter has potential. If the developers can improve gesture accuracy and expand its features, it could become a really cool tool. For now, though, it’s more of a neat tech demo than something you’d want to use every day.
