Fears to Fathom

If you're a fan of psychological horror games that don't cost a dime, you've got to check out Fears To Fathom. This is the first release from indie developer Rayll, and it's completely free the opening chapter of what's planned to be an episodic horror experience. Think of it as the start of a chilling story that’s only just beginning.

Right from the start, the game pulls you in with its retro VHS style visuals and strikingly realistic graphics. It feels like you’ve popped in an old tape, but one where the horrors feel a little too real. The story puts you in the shoes of Miles, a 14 year old home alone while his parents are working out of town. You’ve got your phone to keep in touch with your mom and friends, but as the night goes on, things start to feel… off. The game uses narration from people who’ve “survived” these events, which adds a layer of creepy authenticity.

The atmosphere is thick with tension, thanks to that grainy VHS filter and the first person perspective. It’s reminiscent of found footage horror films like The Blair Witch Project you’re not just playing a game, you’re living inside a nightmare. Every shadow feels deeper, every sound more menacing.

Where Fears To Fathom stumbles a bit is in its guidance or lack thereof. There aren’t always clear clues about what to do next, and when hints do pop up, they vanish almost too fast. This can leave you stuck, forced to choose between hiding and hoping something happens, or risking a move that might attract unwanted attention. Another small frustration? You can’t turn on the lights. It’s pitch black in parts of the house, and while it definitely adds to the fear, it can also make navigation needlessly tricky.

But here’s the good news: this is only Episode 1. Rayll has more installments planned, and if the community gets behind it, this could grow into something special within the indie horror scene. The foundation is solid smooth gameplay, immersive atmosphere, and a premise that hooks you. If you enjoy it, consider supporting the developer so they can keep the scares coming.

For those who can’t get enough of this genre, also take a look at games like Northbury Grove and Still Ridge. But if you’re ready to face your fears, Fears To Fathom is waiting.
