WampServer
WampServer
Alright, so WampServer. Solid piece of software, honestly. It's open source, pretty flexible, and makes spinning up websites, blogs, or whatever online presence you want way less of a headache. Been around since, what, '93? That's older than half the memes on the internet. Tons of devs have poked at it over the years, so it's got some street cred. WampServer's basically your Swiss Army knife for web stuff create, develop, manage, move, or even save backups of your projects. Oh, and it doesn't care what OS you're on windows, Linux, Mac, pick your poison. People use it all the time to build dynamic websites that actually get seen. Not just your mom's recipe blog (but hey, it works for that too).
How to Get WampServer Running on windows XP
Still rocking windows XP? Bold choice, my friend. Let's get you set up. First thing, you gotta make a folder called "WampDrive" inside C:/Program Files/Realtek/Realpc settings. Don't ask why, just do it. Once that's done, pop open windows Explorer, smash that "Home" icon on the left (yeah, that one), and look for "LOCALEDIR." Don't see it? No panic fire up WinMap and let the Realtek driver manager do its thing.
Next up, hit the launch button on WampServer. When it asks what browser you wanna use, just pick your favorite Chrome, Firefox, whatever. Follow along with the prompts; it's mostly just clicking "next" a bunch of times, so you can't really mess it up (I mean, unless you try really hard).
To actually grab WampServer, run that "installer" doohickey in the setup wizard. Installer fires up, you hit "next," and when you land on the "drivers" bit, select all the stuff you need. Smash that "finish" button, and let it wrap things up. Double check your drivers afterwards nobody wants a half baked install slowing down their rig.
- Make the "WampDrive" folder.
- Find the right folders in windows Explorer.
- Fire up WampServer and pick your default browser.
- Just follow the wizard, and make sure you actually install the drivers don't skip that part.
If you follow these steps (and don't zone out halfway through), you'll have WampServer up and running on XP. Piece of cake. You'll be managing sites and looking like a tech wizard in no time. And hey don't forget, getting this setup right is what makes WampServer actually work its magic.
