T4 Editor for Visual Studio 2008

Okay, so if you're still using Visual Studio 2008 (hey, no judgment some of us are stuck with older tools), and you work with T4 templates a lot, there’s this add in called T4 Editor that might actually make life a bit easier. I stumbled on it while trying to untangle a mess of code gen templates and… yeah, it helped more than expected.

The big win? It adds proper editing tools inside VS2008. Like, actual code assistance you know, the stuff that makes typing a little less painful. You get Intellisense, but not just the usual stuff. It also handles T4 specific bits like template directives and even pulls in available C# classes. Handy when you’re in the middle of writing and can’t remember the exact method name (been there).

Highlighting and Jumping Around

So the editor also colors things nicely template parts vs C# vs VB, all get their own look. It’s not a game changer, but honestly? Makes reading the thing a lot less brain melting. You can tweak the colors too, like in any VS editor.

There’s also a "Go To" feature. I didn’t use it at first, but once you’ve got bigger templates (or included files), jumping to definitions saves time. A lot of it.

Handling Big, Messy Templates

  • Nested templates? Yeah, it supports those. You can navigate through them and still get intellisense. Neat.
  • Code folding? Yep. Fold a block, hide some logic, breathe easier.

Customizing Stuff

  • Word wrap, line numbers, whitespace... all optional. Turn on what you need.
  • The indenting is smart too no more smashing the spacebar 10 times to line things up.
  • Even big templates don’t slow it down. It’s snappy, which was a surprise honestly.

Also Part of Entity Developer

If you're using Entity Developer (which, let’s be honest, some teams still do), this editor is part of the package. Works with things like LINQ to SQL, NHibernate, etc. So if you're modeling code in there, it carries over nicely.

But Yeah, It’s Only for VS2008

One catch: it’s only built for Visual Studio 2008. So if you’re on anything newer… this isn’t for you. But if you’re stuck in legacy world (like a lot of us still are), then yeah worth a look.

Anyway, T4 Editor isn’t going to write your templates for you, but it takes some of the pain out of the process. Which is more than I can say for the default T4 setup.
