Submachine Universe
If you're into deep, atmospheric puzzle games that let you lose yourself in exploration, you've got to check out Submachine Universe. Launched back in 2010 by indie developer Mateusz Skutnik who you might know from the cult classic Escape from JiG this game is the latest chapter in the long running Submachine series. It’s a point and click adventure that drops you into a beautifully eerie world filled with mysteries, lore, and mind bending puzzles.
What sets Submachine Universe apart is its open ended, non linear structure. You start off in a lab with a set of coordinates that lead to six different locations but that’s just the beginning. Each location you discover has its own list of clues and coordinates, encouraging you to dig deeper and explore further. There are over a thousand rooms (and counting!), so even the most dedicated explorers haven’t seen it all. You’ll hunt for clues, try out random coordinates, and slowly piece together the story as you go.
The art style is a real standout gritty, hand drawn, and immersive, with a vibe that feels like a cross between classic '90s cartoons and retro sci fi. Think Futurama meets abandoned underwater labs. And the sound design? Absolutely haunting. With creaking doors, ambient noises, and a subtle, high pitched soundtrack, you’ll want to play this one with headphones on to fully soak in the atmosphere.
The main goal is to find and solve four tile puzzles scattered throughout the world. Crack them all, and you’ll unlock the Observatory your ticket out of the submachine. But honestly, half the fun is getting lost in the world itself. The game has inspired countless fan theories, and Skutnik has even woven some of them back into the lore, making the community feel like part of the experience.
Now, a heads up: Submachine Universe is still a work in progress. While it’s packed with content and deeply engaging, some players might run into technical hiccups since it’s built in Adobe Flash (and we all know how that goes these days). But if you’re cool with an unfinished gem that oozes creativity and mystery, this is one adventure you won’t want to miss.
