Security Booth

Step back into 1996 with Security Booth, a free retro horror gem crafted by indie developer Kyle Horwood. In this first person psychological thriller, you play as a security guard working the night shift for the mysterious company Nova Nexus. Your job seems simple: check license plates against your notebook and decide who gets in and who doesn’t. But as the night wears on, you realize this is no ordinary job something eerie is lurking just beyond the booth.

The game nails that nostalgic PlayStation 1 aesthetic, with low poly visuals and grainy textures that amplify the feeling of isolation. You’re not just stuck in one place you can move around, inspect items, and interact with the environment, which pulls you deeper into the unfolding mystery. The story unfolds through text based dialogue (complete with intentional typos and rough edges that add to the vibe), and every interaction feeds into the growing sense of dread.

What really sets Security Booth apart is its atmosphere. It’s the kind of horror that gets under your skin slowly. You’ll hear things a branch snapping, heavy breathing when no one’s around or catch glimpses of shadowy figures in the distance. Sometimes a hand slams against your window. Other times, headlights stare back at you from the dark. Is it your imagination? Is someone or something messing with you? The game plays with your perception, making you question what’s real.

Fans of classic survival horror will feel right at home here. The retro style calls back to iconic titles like Silent Hill and early Resident Evil, but with a simpler, more intimate scope. The sound design is minimalist but effective every creak and whisper keeps you tense and listening closely.

Though Security Booth is relatively short, it leaves a lasting impression. It’s the kind of experience that makes you hope for a sequel one that expands on the lore and deepens the scares. If you enjoy indie horror with a retro soul, this one’s a must play. And if you’re hungry for more after the credits roll, be sure to check out other gems like The Devil, EXsynchronos, and Scarecrow CO OP 2.
