RUBATO Demo

Ever wanted to save the solar system as a frog? That's the charming premise of RUBATO Demo, a free indie platformer for Windows. Created by solo developer dconn, this demo puts you in the webbed feet of Rubato, an adorable frog on a cosmic cleanup mission. After a massive explosion shattered the planets, it's your job to hop through vibrant levels, dodge tricky traps, and collect the scattered pieces to put the solar system back together.

The game wears its inspirations on its sleeve, channeling the adventurous spirit of titles like Super Mario Odyssey and the explorable 2D worlds of games like Terraria. But don't worry about the price tag this one's completely free. If you're looking for another fantastic free platformer with a classic feel, Mari0 (a clever PC mash up of Mario and Portal) is also a great pick.

What really makes RUBATO Demo stand out is its frog based gameplay. Being an amphibian hero isn't just for looks. Rubato can leap to incredible heights, which is perfect for navigating the game's platforming challenges. His most versatile tool, however, is his tongue. Just like a real frog, he can use it in clever ways: to yank boxes out of his path, catch enemy projectiles mid air, and even swing from special grapple points like a froggy Spider Man.

As you progress, you'll even find a rocket launcher, opening up new ways to explore with rocket jumps and destructible blocks. A word of caution, though: a known bug can cause the game to crash if you switch items right after firing the rocket, so it's best to save often!

The presentation is a love letter to retro gaming. The pixel art is full of personality, with expressive animations that make Rubato feel alive. A thoughtfully chosen soundtrack sets the mood, keeping you company as you hop from one planet bit hunt to the next. Each collected fragment not only boosts your health but also unlocks a new area boss, adding a nice layer of challenge and progression to the adventure.

It's important to remember this is a demo, a taste of a larger project still in the works. You can expect a few hours of gameplay here, with 28 planet bits to find and a storyline you can dive into (or skip past if you're eager to just jump right in).

So, is it worth the download? Absolutely. RUBATO Demo does exactly what a great demo should: it showcases a unique vision, delivers a solid chunk of fun, and leaves you wanting more. Despite a bug or two, it's a beautifully crafted, memorable experience that deserves a spot in any fan's collection of indie gems. It’s a delightful demonstration of how a simple idea a frog with a sticky tongue can be the heart of a truly engaging adventure.
