Ristar
If you're into classic action games, you've probably heard of Ristar or maybe you haven't, and that's a shame because this gem from SEGA deserves way more attention than it got back in the day. Originally released for the Sega Genesis in the mid 90s, it eventually made its way to Windows, letting a whole new generation experience its charm. The story hooks you right from the start: you play as Ristar, a star shaped hero whose dad was a legendary warrior kidnapped by the villainous space pirate, Greedy. Your mission? Travel across a vibrant solar system, free your father, and kick some intergalactic butt.
What really sets Ristar apart is its gameplay. Instead of jumping on enemies or shooting them, Ristar uses his stretchy arms to grab foes and slam them or just headbutt them into oblivion. It feels so satisfying and fresh, even today. His stretchy limbs aren’t just for combat, though. You’ll use them to swing across gaps, climb walls, and even navigate tricky platforming sections that require both timing and creativity. Each of the seven planets you visit has its own unique theme, enemies, and environmental puzzles. From icy worlds to jungle planets, the variety keeps things exciting, and you’ll often run into quirky characters who might help you or totally throw you off guard.
Ristar blends action, light puzzle solving, and even a bit of strategy, especially when you’re figuring out how to approach certain enemies or obstacles. The levels are beautifully designed, with colorful graphics and a killer soundtrack that still holds up. It’s one of those games that feels challenging but fair frustrating at times, yeah, but in that "one more try" kind of way. If you love retro games or just want to try something different from the typical platformer, Ristar is an absolute must play. It’s creative, full of heart, and honestly, it’s a crime that it never got a proper sequel.
