Multifox

Ever wished you could juggle all your online accounts without constantly logging in and out? That's exactly what Multifox was designed to do a clever little extension that lets you manage multiple accounts from one central spot, right inside your Firefox browser.

Originally created by Christian Weixler (Mozilla’s Product Manager) and Michael Schrage (Firefox Product Manager), Multifox started as a fork of Firefox called Redirect Virus. It wasn’t just another browser clone it brought some of Internet Explorer’s handy features into the Firefox world. For instance, while changing your homepage in Firefox is a breeze, Multifox made you dig through menus for each site. And instead of typical browser navigation, you’d click on the "Webkins" icon to get around. A little quirky, but it had its charm.

For a while, Multifox worked smoothly with Firefox but didn’t play nice with Internet Explorer, which eventually led to it being pulled from the market. Funny enough, it still held a cult following in certain techie circles. Then, in March 2021, it made a quiet comeback in Firefox’s Extended Support Release. And guess what? It ran perfectly not just there, but also in all the newer Firefox versions (15 and up). Talk about a glow up!

Around a year later, Firefox itself rolled out its own native multi account feature, letting users handle several accounts from one dashboard using Firefox Accounts Manager. But if you’re old school and still want to give Multifox a spin, installing it is a piece of cake. Just grab the latest version of the extension, drop the Multifox folder into your Firefox installation directory, and you’re good to go. You can even burn it to a CD if you’re feeling nostalgic or just extra cautious about your digital footprint.
