If you're looking for a straightforward image editing tool that won't overwhelm you with complexity, LazPaint might be worth checking out. This free, open source program was created by a developer named Circular with help from the Lazarus community, and it's built using Free Pascal programming language through the Lazarus IDE.

What's great about LazPaint is its accessibility it runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS, and there's even a portable Windows version you can run directly from a USB drive without installation. The program handles the OpenRaster file format, which means you can exchange layered projects with more advanced editors like GIMP, Krita, and MyPaint. While it can open Photoshop files, they'll appear as flattened images without layers intact.

The interface keeps things simple with movable windows for tools, layers, and colors that you can arrange around your canvas. Though the docking feature works, it does feel a bit rough around the edges visually. When docked, your canvas automatically maximizes to fill available space, which can be convenient for focusing on your work.

Where LazPaint really shows its basic nature is in the feature set. Beyond layer support and transparency which are genuinely useful the toolset remains quite limited. There's minimal brush customization, no texture support, and the transformation tools lack the power you'd find in more developed editors. One interesting bonus is its ability to import 3D models using the Wavefront Object format, though this feels somewhat out of place given the otherwise simple feature set.

For professional artists, LazPaint will likely feel too restrictive, while beginners might find it inefficient compared to more user friendly alternatives. The limited brush options and basic transform tools can make creative work challenging. However, the program serves as an excellent demonstration of what can be achieved with the Lazarus IDE, Pascal programming language, and the BGRABitmap graphics library making it more interesting from a technical perspective than as a practical creative tool for most users.
