Job Hunter 202X

Ever feel like the job hunt itself could be its own video game? Well, developer BubblyOasis (Joanie Rich) made that a reality with Job Hunter 202X, a free RPG you can play on Windows. Created during a period of her own unemployment for a game jam, it turns the stressful search for work into a surprisingly relatable pixel art adventure.

You step into the shoes of a writer who, much like many of us in recent years, has lost their job due to a pandemic. Your mission is straightforward but tense: find a new job before your savings hit zero or the emotional grind completely wears you down. This means driving around a digital town, visiting businesses, and tackling the all too familiar hurdles of filling out applications and crafting cover letters.

But it's not just about sending out resumes. The game adds a clever survival layer. You have to manage your character's basic needs remembering to take breaks, eat on time, and manage stress. Ignore these, and a combination of fatigue, hunger, and anxiety will lead to a collapse, resulting in a Game Over. It’s a poignant reminder of how draining the job search can be on every level.

Built with RPG Maker MZ, the game is easy to pick up with simple keyboard and mouse controls. Once you get past the initial stage, your progress saves automatically, letting you take the pressure in bite sized sessions. The retro style graphics and turn based elements give it a classic, comforting feel, even as you battle the bureaucratic bosses of the employment world.

A crucial heads up: Job Hunter 202X doesn't shy away from the mental health struggles tied to unemployment. It openly depicts themes of depression and anxiety. The developer has shared that making the game was a therapeutic process for her, but she wisely advises players to consider their own mental state before diving in. If you're feeling particularly vulnerable, it might be one to skip for now.

What’s really smart about this game is how it handles a serious topic. It doesn’t make light of unemployment; instead, it frames the daily struggle in a new way, making you think about the resilience it takes. It’s a short, thoughtful experience that might just change how you see the quest for a nine to five.
