Guilty Gear X

If you're a fan of fast paced, stylish fighting games, you've probably heard of Guilty Gear X. Known as Guilty Gear X: By Your Side in Japan, this title burst onto the scene as the second major entry in the iconic series developed by Arc System Works and published by Sammy Corporation. What’s wild is that the team pulled this off in just about two months before its follow up, Guilty Gear X Revolutions, hit the shelves. Talk about crunch time!

The story kicks off in a quiet little town called Sumaria, where we meet Johnny a regular guy whose life gets flipped upside down when his childhood friend Jody is attacked by a mysterious serial killer. This isn’t your average villain, though. The killer uses a freaky experimental serum named "Glock" to turn ordinary people into super powered fighting machines. Johnny isn’t about to let that slide. He teams up with his older sister Mommy, who has this insane ability to transform into a nearly unstoppable weapon called "GE." Together, they throw down to save their town and take justice into their own hands.

Gameplay in Guilty Gear X builds on the foundation of the first game but spices things up with a new Rage mechanic. Instead of just whittling down your opponent’s health bar, every hit you land or take builds up your Rage meter. Fill it up, and you unlock the ability to pull off flashy special moves, wipe out groups of enemies, or even launch into aerial combos. It adds a layer of strategy because, yeah, your attacks are powerful, but they’re not always reliable. Timing and smart use of your Rage are key if you want to dominate.

This installment isn’t just a rehash it’s a full upgrade. The Arcade version is solid, but the Dreamcast release really shines with extra modes like Story, Endless, and even a character customizer. The arenas are bigger, the challenges are tougher, and there’s a ton of content to dig into, including tutorials that help you master advanced techniques. Whether you play on arcade cabinets or at home on Dreamcast, Guilty Gear X delivers a punchy, satisfying experience that still holds up today. So pick your platform, grab a controller, and dive into one of fighting games’ most inventive eras.
