And once you've got your image or video, it comes with a handy built in editor to tweak things just the way you want.

When you launch FastStone Capture, you’ll notice a small, floating control panel that’s packed with options. It’s divided into three main sections: Screen Capture, Screen Recorder, and Output. The Screen Capture tab lets you choose from different capture modes like capturing an active window, a custom shaped region, or even a scrolling page. You can trigger these captures with hotkeys or by right clicking the system tray icon for quick access. It’s designed for speed and convenience.

Before taking a screenshot, you can decide where you want the image to go. The Output dropdown gives you choices like saving directly to a file, copying to the clipboard, sending to an editor, or even uploading via FTP. There’s also a preview option so you can check your shot before finalizing it. Plus, you can add delays, include the mouse cursor, or slap on a watermark handy for tutorials or professional presentations.

When it comes to recording, FastStone Capture keeps things simple but effective. You can record any part of your screen a specific window, a selected area, or the full display. By default, it doesn’t capture audio, but you can easily enable microphone or system sound with a checkbox. Once you hit record, it captures mouse movements, clicks, and on screen action clearly. After recording, you can trim, annotate, or highlight parts of the video right in the editor.

One thing to note: while screen captures can be saved in many formats (JPEG, PNG, PDF, etc.), screen recordings are limited to WMV. That might not be ideal for everyone, but it’s a practical format for Windows users. The editing tools, though not overly fancy, are more than enough for marking up images or adding basic effects to videos.
