Doppelgänger Doppelgänger

Doppelgänger

I recently checked out Doppelgänger, this free horror game that's been getting some attention, and wow it definitely knows how to build tension! You play as Maxwell, an ordinary office worker whose normal day quickly spirals into something much darker. The game starts with these surprisingly relatable moments like grabbing snacks at a convenience store, which makes the eventual shift into horror territory even more effective.

What really stood out to me was how the game uses ordinary activities to build dread. You'll find yourself doing things like reheating pizza or taking a shower, all while this unsettling feeling grows in the background. The sound design is absolutely brilliant those subtle creaks and distant noises had me constantly looking over my shoulder. I'd definitely recommend playing with headphones in a dark room for the full experience.

That being said, Doppelgänger does have some quirks that might test your patience. The lack of a mini map means you'll probably get lost a few times trying to find your way through the forest and around Maxwell's house. And yeah, Maxwell moves at what feels like a permanent walking pace, which can make backtracking pretty tedious when you're trying to figure out where to go next.

But here's the thing those limitations might actually be part of what makes the game so unsettling. The slow pace forces you to soak in the atmosphere, and getting lost adds to that feeling of vulnerability. The payoff toward the end is genuinely chilling and makes the journey worthwhile. If you're into psychological horror that builds slowly and messes with your head, Doppelgänger is definitely worth downloading especially considering it's free!
