When it comes to adjusting color quality in your images, Photoshop is often the go to tool for professionals, but there are simpler alternatives out there. One of them is ColorPix, a lightweight and free color picker that’s pretty handy for quick edits. It captures the exact pixel color under your mouse and converts it into various formats. You can use its built in magnifier to zoom into an image, drag to select areas, or even copy color values to your clipboard. But let’s be honest it’s not always the smoothest experience. Trying to zoom or tweak details can feel a bit clunky. You either have to carefully navigate your cursor over a tiny image or use the alt click shortcut to bring up the zoom tool. Once you’ve got your view just right, you can input your desired dimensions in the "chart" section, and ColorPix will crop the image accordingly. Saving your work is straightforward just hit the "Save" button.

One issue I’ve run into with ColorPix is its compatibility with certain file types. If you try saving an image as a JPEG, you might get an error message saying the file can’t be opened. That’s because ColorPix relies on the RGB color system, which is different from the CMYK system often used in Windows environments. RGB is more universal, so it works on almost any computer, but Mac users might notice some display issues, especially in browsers. Luckily, there’s an easy fix: grab a free alternative like Paint Shop Pro. It comes with a built in hex color conversion tool that handles these format transitions seamlessly.

If you want to preview your images in their original state before making changes, Paint Shop Pro is your friend. Open your image there, set the ColorPix window to "Original" size, and head over to the "Color" tab. From there, you can play around with color values until everything looks just right. Once you’re happy, save your image as a JPEG using the same method you’d use for a GIF. It’s a simple workaround that makes color editing a lot more flexible, even if you’re not working in Photoshop.
