Bulat Steel Total War

If you're a fan of Total War: Medieval II and love diving deep into historical warfare, you've got to check out Bulat Steel a totally free mod that seriously expands the game. This isn't just some minor tweak; it’s a full blown enhancement packed with new factions, units, maps, and even scripted events that pull you right into the medieval world.

One of the coolest things about Bulat Steel is the two massive historical campaigns it introduces. The first is set in 1100 AD and lets you choose from 28 different factions, split among Catholic, Orthodox, Pagan, and Islamic groups. The second campaign jumps to 1220 AD and throws in 30 more factions to command. With nearly 500 new units and a beautifully redesigned campaign map, there’s no shortage of content to explore.

But it’s not just about quantity the mod also focuses on immersion. There are hundreds of custom events, and the music (curated by Leeekaaa) really helps set the tone for each faction. Plus, the AI has been tweaked to be smarter and more engaging, making battles and campaigns feel fresh even if you’ve played the base game to death.

That said, Bulat Steel isn’t perfect. While most of it aims for historical accuracy, there are some odd choices like electric guitars roaring during battles or character art borrowed from Game of Thrones that can break the immersion. Some buildings and assets also feel a bit inconsistent in quality. A few structures just don’t hold up visually next to gems like the stunning Rostov Castle.

Another letdown is the presentation outside gameplay. Every loading screen and most menus are stamped with the mod’s name and creator credits, which feels more like an ad than part of the game. It’s a small thing, but when you’re trying to lose yourself in a medieval world, it can be distracting.

Still, if you can look past those quirks, Bulat Steel delivers where it counts. The new scripts are highly customizable, letting you tailor the experience to your liking, and the sheer amount of content makes it one of the most ambitious mods out there for Medieval II. For a different flavor, you might also want to try Hellenika Total War, another great mod easily installed through Nexus Mods.

At the end of the day, Bulat Steel is an incredible package slightly held back by its presentation. But if you’re hungry for more depth, more factions, and more war, this mod is absolutely worth your time.
