Brave Dogs Road

If you're a fan of nostalgic pixel art adventures, you might have come across Brave Dogs Road a platformer crafted by pixel artist Shawn. Born out of coding experiments, this game carries a certain retro charm that might tug at the heartstrings of those who grew up with classic 8 bit and 16 bit titles. But while its intentions are sweet, the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

Getting your hands on Brave Dogs Road is straightforward enough just download the zip file. But here’s where things get a bit tricky. You’ll need software like WinRAR or another decompression tool to unpack it, and even then, the game requires double extraction. Once you’ve jumped through those hoops, you’ll be greeted by a settings menu where you can tweak the resolution. Sounds simple, right? Not quite.

Running the game can feel like solving a puzzle in itself. After launching, you might find yourself needing to close the game entirely and then run it as an administrator. If that doesn’t do the trick, tweaking your firewall settings might be the next step. And if you’re on an older version of Windows, you might have a slightly easier time though that’s hardly a selling point.

Built with Game Maker Studio and clearly inspired by indie darling Cave Story, Brave Dogs Road aims for a similar vibe but falls short in almost every way. The frame rate is often choppy, making movement feel sluggish, and the overall gameplay lacks polish. There’s no real story to speak of just a pixelated pup running around with no clear purpose. If you’re looking for immersion, you won’t find it here.

Graphically, the game struggles too. The resolution settings don’t always match what’s displayed, and the pixelation can be overwhelming. Lowering your graphics card settings might help on some devices, but it’s far from a guaranteed fix. It’s clear that Brave Dogs Road is still in its early stages, and while the developer does release updates, they haven’t yet translated into meaningful improvements.

For a more satisfying experience, you’re better off checking out games like Cave Story, Capsized, or the masterpiece that is Hollow Knight. These titles deliver the tight gameplay, engaging stories, and polished visuals that Brave Dogs Road is still striving for. Here’s hoping future updates can turn this experimental project into something special but for now, it’s one for the patient and curious only.
