Battle Realms
If you're into strategy games that mix fantasy, adventure, and a bit of romance, then Battle Realms might just be the hidden gem you’ve been looking for. Developed by Liquid Entertainment and published by Crave Entertainment and Ubisoft, this real time strategy title was actually the studio’s debut game and what a way to kick things off!
Set in a world known as the Battle Ages, the game plunges you into a time where ancient evils are rising, threatening humanity itself. You step into the shoes of one of several unique heroes, each with their own strengths and backstory. Your mission? Explore vast realms, engage in tactical combat, solve puzzles, and even find love along the way all in a bid to reclaim the throne for your queen. With eight distinct realms to conquer, each packed with quests, monsters, and challenges, the game keeps you on your toes. One wrong move, and you might find yourself starting over so strategy and careful planning are key.
Following the success of its predecessor, Battle Grounds: Normandy, the developers released the Battle Ages expansion in October 2002. This wasn’t just a simple add on it brought two brand new episodes, fresh maps, deeper story elements, and even new creatures like animals and monsters. One of the coolest additions was the special Forces Colored avatar, given as a free gift to fans. This avatar transformed into a wolf a creature central to the expansion’s lore. Interestingly, the wolf’s name in the game is inspired by the French pronunciation "yoo vre," a playful twist on the English word. It’s these little details that give Battle Realms its charm and make it stand out even years later.
Though it might not have reached the blockbuster status of some bigger titles, Battle Realms has maintained a loyal fanbase thanks to its rich world building, engaging gameplay, and memorable expansions. If you enjoy RTS games with personality and depth, this one’s definitely worth a play.
