ArsClip
Looking for a free alternative to Photoshop that won't break the bank? You might want to check out AUSClip, an open source tool that's been quietly serving users for two decades now. The project recently celebrated its 20th anniversary on January 25th, which is quite impressive in the fast moving world of software.
The story behind AUSClip is pretty interesting. It originally started as a Linux script designed to help users create shortcuts and automatically install essential software like antivirus programs. But the developers, Joe and the team behind ArsClip, ran into some compatibility issues when they tried to make it work on Windows systems. The script worked beautifully on Linux but struggled on Windows platforms.
Their solution was to create a second script called ArsClip that mimicked Windows behavior while adding the ability to handle compressed images from Windows folders. They didn't stop there though they also developed Joejoesoft, which brought additional features like support for Windows codecs to the table.
Fast forward to today, and there's a Windows 10 version available that's packed with useful features. One of my personal favorites is how easily you can copy images between different locations. The automatic download feature is another time saver that lets you keep working without interruption. If you're curious about trying it out, just visit their website and follow the setup instructions. Just a heads up if you're running Windows 10, you might need to download the Insider program, which is free but only for a limited time.
What makes AUSClip stand out is its longevity and the fact that it's completely free and open source. While it might not have all the bells and whistles of premium software like Photoshop, it covers the basics really well and has been refined over twenty years of development. For quick image tasks and basic editing needs, it's definitely worth a look.
